Benfica have moved into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League with a 2-1 victory in France over Marseille. Benfica went into the match needing to score after the first leg finished 1-1 in Lisbon but it was Marseille who scored first in the second half to take a 1-0 lead when Niang tapped the ball into the net after a mad scramble. Benfica did not wait long to equalize as Maxi Pereira scored just five minutes later when his long shot deflected off a Marseille defender and Benfica brought the game to even. The game then looked to be heading to extra time but substitute Kardec had something else in mind when he converted Pablo Aimar's free kick after the rebound went straight to him and he made no mistake wiring the shot past the keeper for Benfica at the 90th minute.
Sporting hosted Atletico Madrid at home after a scoreless first leg but it was the visitors that opened the scoring just three minutes in when Sergio Aguero put the visitors in front. Liedson brought the game back to square at the 19 minute mark but Aguero stroke once again at the 33rd minute to put Atletico in front once again. Sporting's Polga brought the game once again to even just before the half. The second half was scoreless and Atletico advanced to the quarter-finals on away goals
